SunrisePDX Statement on the Murder of Patrick Kimmons

On September 30, 2018, the Portland Police Bureau murdered 27 year old Patrick Kimmons, shooting him 9 times in the back. Kimmons’ killers, Sgt. Garry Britt and officer Jeffrey Livingston, have yet to be held accountable for his murder. Sunrise PDX stands in solidarity with his mother, Letha Winston, to demand that Mayor Ted Wheeler, District Attorney Mike Schmidt, and Senior Public Safety Advisor Robert King, watch the police video of his death and reopen his case.

Black liberation and the fight against climate catastrophe cannot be separated. Patrick’s death is part of a larger system of injustice that perpetuates theft, violence, and systemic discrimination of Black, Indigenous and People of Color.  Black lives are not disposable.

Climate change and white supremacy did not emerge out of a vacuum, but out of  the idea that this country was founded on: that some lives matter more than others. Patrick Kimmons is not just a statistic, but one of many lives that was violently taken by the Portland Police. Justice for Patrick Kimmons and all others. No Justice No Peace.
